Our Story
You've heard about our services, but what makes Kamloops Physiotherapy the clinic it is today? Our story is one of growth, care, and helping our community stay active.
Kamloops Physiotherapy has been part of the Kamloops community since 1996, when physiotherapist John Howick and his wife, Karen, opened the doors to the original clinic on Seymour Street.
From the beginning, John brought a strong focus on manual therapy, ongoing learning, and providing professional, caring treatment. Those priorities helped shape the clinic in its early years and continue to influence how our team approaches patient care today.
Growing with Kamloops
As the clinic's team and patient community grew, so did the space needed to support them. The Downtown clinic was remodelled three separate times over the years to accommodate additional therapists and meet increasing demand.
In 2013, Kamloops Physiotherapy opened a second location in Sahali. Valleyview followed in 2022, giving the clinic another large, modern space to serve patients across the city.
A few years later, the Sahali clinic was amalgamated into our expanded Downtown location, allowing us to keep our team well connected while continuing to provide care from two bright, spacious and welcoming clinics.
Today, Kamloops Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre has grown to include 14 physiotherapists, three Registered Massage Therapists and one Kinesiologist. Over the past three decades, thousands of people from Kamloops and the surrounding region have come through our doors for treatment, rehabilitation and support.
A broad range of experience
Our growth has allowed us to bring together practitioners with experience across a wide range of areas of physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Members of our team have advanced training, certification or particular clinical interests in areas including manual therapy, sports physiotherapy, hand therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, post-concussion rehabilitation, pelvic floor physiotherapy, acupuncture, dry needling and IMS, chronic pain management, and ultrasound imaging.
Registered Massage Therapy and Kinesiology further expand the services available within the clinic, making it easier for patients to access different forms of care while remaining connected with one team.
We live here too
Our connection to Kamloops extends well beyond the clinic.
Many of our therapists are avid outdoor enthusiasts and active participants in the same sports and activities enjoyed by our patients. Among our team are mountain bikers, gravel riders, road cyclists, runners, rock climbers, hockey players, curlers, skiers, hikers, soccer players and more.
That first-hand connection to movement, recreation and sport is part of the culture of the clinic. We understand how important it can be to get back to a favourite trail, activity, sport or simply the routines of everyday life.
Supporting our community
John and Karen have also supported a number of local organizations and outdoor initiatives over the years, including the Kamloops Performance Cycling Centre, the Isobel Lake Winter Recreational Trail network and the Overlander Ski Club.
Members of our therapy and administrative teams have volunteered at community events including Boogie the Bridge, the Overlander XC Ski Loppet, the Kamloops Tennis Centre's ITF Junior World Tennis Tournament and the BC Winter Games.
These connections are a natural extension of being part of the community we serve.
What hasn't changed
Kamloops Physiotherapy looks very different today than it did when John and Karen first opened the Seymour Street clinic in 1996. The team is larger, the range of services is broader, and the clinic now operates from two locations.
What has remained remarkably consistent is the emphasis on quality care, professionalism, continued learning and a shared approach to how patients should be treated.
Those common values have helped create a team in which practitioners stay connected, learn from one another and take pride in the care they provide. More than 30 years after the clinic began, they remain at the heart of Kamloops Physiotherapy.
