Massage Therapy
Massage therapy can help reduce muscle tension, manage stress, improve mobility, and support recovery from injury with tailored, hands-on treatment.
Who massage therapy is for
Registered Massage Therapists in British Columbia are trained in assessment, hands-on treatment, and therapeutic exercise. Massage therapy can support more than general relaxation or back and neck pain.
You may seek massage therapy for muscle tension, soreness, headaches, stress, recovery from injury, or discomfort that affects work, sleep, exercise, or daily activity.
Massage therapy may help with concerns involving:
- neck, upper back, and mid-back pain
- low back, pelvis, and sciatic-type symptoms
- hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, calf, or foot discomfort
- shoulder pain or reduced mobility
- forearm, wrist, hand, or elbow tension
- headaches, facial tension, or jaw-related discomfort
What sessions may include
Your RMT will start by asking about your symptoms, health history, goals, and any areas of concern. Treatment is then adapted to your comfort level, the area being treated, and what you are hoping to improve.
Massage therapy may include techniques such as:
- deep tissue massage
- trigger point release
- myofascial release
- soft tissue release
- muscle energy technique
- neuromuscular technique
- joint mobilization
- manual traction or decompression
- craniosacral, membrane, or diaphragm release techniques, where appropriate
Your RMT may also provide home care, exercise suggestions, postural advice, or recommendations to connect with another practitioner when that would better support your care.
How massage therapy fits with other care
Massage therapy can be used on its own or alongside physiotherapy, kinesiology, or other care when a coordinated plan would better support your goals. For some people, it helps manage stress and muscle tension. For others, it supports recovery, mobility, or comfort as part of a broader care plan.
Whatever your goals, massage therapy can help you feel more comfortable, move more freely, and understand practical ways to support your body between appointments.
What to expect
Your appointment will include a short intake, a discussion of your goals, and treatment based on your preferences and clinical needs. Your RMT will check in about pressure, comfort, and positioning throughout the session.
If your symptoms suggest that another type of assessment or support may be useful, your RMT can help you understand your options.
